Worthington Medal will be presented next month during the Presidents Luncheon at the ASME 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and preisgegebensein in Tampa, Fla. The Presidents Luncheon will be held Monday, Nov. 6, from 1200 p.m. to 130 p.m.John E. Dec, Ph.D., an ASME Fellow and a senior scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., will receive the Societys Soichiro Honda Medal during the luncheon. The medal, which was established in 1983, recognizes an individual for an outstanding achievement or a series of significant engineerin g contributions in developing improvements in the field of personal transportation.Dr. Dec, who has worked at Sandias Combustion Research Facility since 1989, is being honored for his outstanding contributions to automotive engineering through landmark research and publications on diesel combustion and homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion, which have advanced the understanding of combustion processes and significantly influenced internal combustion engine education and engine entwurf. Dec has performed extensive research of the combustion processes in both diesel and low-temperature gasoline combustion (LTGC) engines at Sandia, and instituted an LTGC engine laboratory where he and his team have strived to better comprehend the fundamentals of LTGC and develop approaches for solving the challenges the technology can present. Charbel Farhat, the 2017 recipient of the Spirit of St. Louis Medal.ASME Fellow Charbel Farhat, Ph.D., the Vivian Church Hoff professor of aircraf t structures, and chair of the aeronautics and astronautics department at Stanford University, will be presented the Spirit of St. Louis Medal at the luncheon. The medal, which was first awarded in 1929, honors meritorious service in the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics.Dr. Farhat, who is also the director of the Army High Performance Computing Research Center at Stanford, is being recognized with the award for his sustained theoretical and computational research contributions in the broad field of fluid-structure interaction that have been applied to the solution of mission critical problems in aeronautical, automotive, marine, mechanical and naval engineering. A Fellow of five professional societies in addition to ASME, Farhat is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board.Yu-Tai Lee, Ph.D., P.E., who recently retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West B ethesda, Md., will receive the Henry R. Worthington Medal at the banquet. The medal, which was first awarded in 1980, honors eminent achievement in the field of pumping machinery. Yu-Tai Lee, the 2017 recipient of the Henry R. Worthington Medal.Dr. Lee is being recognized for seminal contributions to the development of computational methods for the analysis and innovative design of U.S. Navy submarine propulsion pumps and shipboard turbomachinery and for distinguished service to ASME including the mentoring of future naval engineers and conference newcomers. Currently the treasurer of the Fluids Engineering Division and member of the Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award Committee, Lee had previously held various positions within the Fluids Engineering Division, including chair, vice chair and secretary of the division and chair of the Fluids Engineering Award Committee.Also receiving awards during the Presidents Luncheon will be Luca Rivadossi, of RVD S.r.l. in Lumezzane, Italy, and Gian Paolo Beretta, Sc.D., of the University of Brescia in Italy, who will be presented with the Edward F. By analyzing data from the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, which collected employment and earnings rates for graduates by major, Forbes determined that when it comes to your economic prospects, anthropology is the worst major a student can choose.Of the ten worst majors on Forbes list, five are in the humanities (philosophy, history, English, liberal arts and anthropology). But dont toss out your diploma just yet- here are some tips for applying for jobs with a liberal arts degreeKnow what they want For many entry-level jobs, employers dont expect new grads to have relevant experience. What they do expect, however, are relevant skills. Think over your academic experience and make a list of the skills you developed throughout college- these might include experience wit h analytical writing, project organization, quantitative research or verbal presentation. Many job postings list the types of skills they are looking for in candidates- mention those that you have in your titel letter and back them up with specific experiences. Its also appropriate to describe your personality traits to the extent that they are relevant to the role. But dont just say youre outgoing, motivated or calm under pressure- give examples of how you have demonstrated these traits.And what they dont want. No offense, but your future employer probably doesnt care that you have a nuanced understanding of prehistoric anthropology or 18th century English literature. So unless youre applying for a role where your liberal arts coursework is relevant, dont bother mentioning it in your cover letter or resume. Instead, focus on the skills you gained through your studies, like critical thinking and professional writing.Keep an open mind. Unlike your classmates who majored in, say, chem ical engineering, there isnt a clear career path for most liberal arts majors. So cast a broad net in your employment search look into opportunities in both the private and public sectors, and consider roles in industries bedrngnis traditionally associated with your major. For example, if youre a philosophy major, you probably didnt envision yourself working at a large bank- but you might be surprised to find out that many banks run public service foundations and community development practices that might be looking for a great writer.Think long-term. It is highly likely that your first employer out of college will not be your last. Your career is certainly not defined by your first job- it is a decades-long, dynamic part of your life.
